Jasc is an old hand at digital imaging. It is the company behind Paint Shop Pro, the hugely popular graphics software that emerged as an affordable alternative to Adobe's Photoshop.
After Shot is a cut-down version of Paint Shop Pro, adopting many of its complex functions but placing them behind a friendlier front end.
The interface is very straightforward, with available images displayed as thumbnails. Tabs down the side let users search for images, browse the computer or display further image information. Text, keywords and audio can be attached to an image to aid recognition, and AVI movie files are supported.
When a photo is selected all the popular methods of changing its appearance are immediately highlighted. These include red-eye removal, image rotate and crop selection.
More advanced options adjust the colour saturation, brightness, hue and sharpness. Frustratingly, only the previously applied effect can be withdrawn as there's no multiple 'undo' facility here.
Plenty of special effects are available, such as Ripples, Fisheye and the psychedelic Invert. As these are applied, the image is split in two, and the effects are demonstrated on one half only.
The number of print options is commendable. After Shot can divide an A4 sheet of paper to make the most efficient use of the page, leaving the user to just drag and drop images into place. Simple web pages can be designed by using any of the 41 available templates.
After Shot also automates the process of uploading images to an online service for sharing or developing images. Another way to share photos is to make a slideshow that friends can view without the need to own After Shot.
