As with its predecessors, Nero 5.5 will convert any kind of audio file into the desired format, making the ripping, burning and transporting of both music and video files a simple operation. What sets this version apart from the earlier incarnations are new features for creating and editing video mixes.

For the home movie enthusiast, the software allows you to encode AVI video files from a video camera and burn them into the underrated VCD (video CD) format, or even higher quality SVCD, with MPEG 1 and MPEG 2 quality respectively.

Most new DVD players will play VCDs and you will be able to store all manner of video projects on one disc. As with a normal DVD, Nero 5.5 will also create menus with thumbnail examples of content, both audio and visual.

This package can also burn to 32 drives simultaneously from one PC, although this is only of use to professionals and businesses who need to rip and burn in large volumes. We tested this on two drives and it worked well simultaneously, but we couldn't find 32 drives and enough connections to test the full amount!

The Wave Editor allows you to splice mixes and has filters for cutting out crackle and hiss from old LPs and tapes, as well as many other effects. Decoding MP3s and burning onto CD is no problem but beware - you can only output MP3s from WAV files 30 times before you need to purchase an encoder from the Nero website.

The toolkit and drive speed facilities allow you to test the performance of your CD-RW and reduce speed to limit noise, and the CD-Cover designer has easy drag-and-drop professional editing tools.

Features:

  • Wave Editor
  • MPEG 1 video encoder
  • VCD SVCD menu creator
  • Nero toolkit
  • Nero Drive Speed
  • Multitasking recording engine
