You don't need to spend a fortune to gain an online retail presence. If e-tailing is simply an adjunct to a physical store, if you're selling products from home, or if you're happy to slowly roll out an online shop that can grow organically, then the unflashy Store4web could be the economical answer.
Open the Shop Settings and you will be invited to set a name for your store, some lines of introductory blurb, and import your choice of artwork. You can choose to present this within a limited selection of templates.
You work through a simple and speedy set of dialog boxes which will incorporate company contact details, payment details and shipping information on your site.
Store4web lets you split your wares into up to 25 categories, with up to 100 products in each, but the templates are always easy to navigate and - providing low-tech and sparse is your bag - quite elegant.
Simply click the Globe button, and your site is uploaded to the web. Your Categories, Products and Shopping Cart pages form the site, and hosting is free for the first six months and Eu9.95 (around £6) a month thereafter.
It's important to remember what this package doesn't do. Although you can set up your page for any payment system you want, including credit cards, that is up to you and the merchant services division of your bank to arrange.
Similarly, you have to collect the payments and dispatch the goods. Store4web is merely a marketplace. But at £40 to get you on the web in just minutes, it's not a bad place to start.
