Intel has developed plans for the next generation of the Peripheral Component Interconnect (PCI) bus, promising a huge leap in performance.
The specification, dubbed 3GIO, has already been backed by industry leaders including Compaq, IBM, Dell and Microsoft.
The enhanced architecture, now officially codenamed Arapahoe, should allow future expansion cards and PC components to operate at much higher speeds.
According to Intel, the increased bandwidth offered by the system is needed to support the rash of emerging data-hungry multimedia applications.
Leading manufacturers have been quick to endorse the technology.
"Arapahoe will be valuable to IBM customers because it will provide them with new, high-bandwidth options for the future while protecting their current investment," said Fran O'Sullivan, general manager at IBM Personal Computing Devices.
