Apple has launched a raft of faster, or 'speed bumped' Macs, and revealed the newest update to its MacOS X operating system.

At the recent MacWorld Expo show in New York, the company unveiled a collection of improved iMacs and G4 towers, including a multi-processor machine.

The iMac range is claimed to be "designed for the digital lifestyle", with models running at speeds up to 700Mhz and offering slot-loading CD-RW drives, extra memory and larger hard drives.

The new line also marks a turning point as each system comes with Mac OS X pre-installed. Those hoping for a G4-based iMac were sadly disappointed. Prices start at £799.

At the professional end, the G4 towers now start at £1409 for a 733Mhz model with 128Mb of Ram, a 40Gb hard drive, CD writer and GeForce2 MX graphics.

The hard disks in all models are still based on the older ATA-66 standard though, not the faster ATA-100 as in the latest PCs. The top-of-the-line G4 now boasts dual 800Mhz processors, along with a DVD writer, for £2936.32.

On the MacOS X front, performance is the issue of the day with version 10.1 demonstrating significant speed improvements. DVD playback and CD burning capabilities have also been added, as has the ability to seamlessly network with Windows clients and servers.

Version 10.1 is priced at £99 and existing users can upgrade for £15. All prices include VAT.
