Spurred on by the success of its online internet store, Apple has launched a chain of retail outlets across the US. The first two opened on 19 May at McLean,Virginia, and Glendale, California, and 25 are to be rolled out in total.
"The Apple stores offer an amazing new way to buy a computer," said chief executive Steve Jobs. "Rather than just hear about megahertz and megabytes, customers can now learn and experience the things they can actually do with a computer, like make movies, burn custom CDs, and publish digital photos on a personal website."
The stores will be organised into key sections such as 'Consumer' and 'Pro' and allow users to have hands-on experience with Apple products, and each includes a special area known as the Genius Bar.
Here Mac experts will answer support questions and, if they can't, they have hotline access direct to the Apple HQ at Cupertino. In addition, all Macs connected to the internet will use Apple's AirPort wireless system.
The company claims that the stores will carry more than 300 third-party software titles for professionals and consumers, and an inventory for every product displayed to ensure customers can walk away with items when they want them.
According to US news websites, feedback on the stores has been positive but Apple has no plans to open similar stores in the UK.
