With technologies in the consumer electronics market converging around the PC, Tiny and Time have recently launched their takes on the idea of the all-in-one home entertainment system.
The Tiny Takami - meaning 'excellent idea' in Japanese - can act as a digital video recorder complete with time-shifting, CD player with jukebox facility, DVD player, MP3 player and an 800Mhz Athlon PC with gaming, internet and email facilities, all in one small silver VCR-sized box.
At its most basic, the unit costs £999 with wireless keyboard, remote control and stereo speakers. With more to spend you can upgrade to the £1499 model with a 15in LCD screen, or the 42in gas plasma screen and DTS home theatre sound system for £6999.
Time has released the Player at a much cheaper £499 but still featuring a DVD player, CD player, 700Mhz AMD PC with internet, email and gaming facilities, plus microphone, joystick, gamepad and seven games including Quake III. All prices include VAT.
The boxes are just the start of what is sure to be a hotly contested market for providing space saving, all-in-one entertainment systems.
