Amazon.com plans to close its European customer service facility in a cost-cutting move that will affect 240 jobs.
The work currently being carried out at the customer centre in The Netherlands will be transferred to sites in the UK and Germany, and the 240 staff affected will be offered jobs at offices in Regensberg in Germany and Slough in the UK.
The cuts are part of the online bookseller's stated drive to become profitable by the end of the year.
Last month, Amazon announced it would axe 15 per cent, or 1300 employees, mainly as a result of closing its US distribution and customer service centres. The company employs around 1800 staff in Europe and operates websites in France, UK and Germany.
Diego Piacentini, senior vice president and general manager for Amazon's international operations, said: "We are fully committed to our pan-European strategy and to serving our customers in Europe better than ever."
