Pocket rewrite for WinCE

The OS, which is codenamed "Rapier", is effectively a rewritten, redesigned version of Windows CE and will ship with Pocket versions of Word, Excel and Outlook Inbox as standard.

The announcement follows last month's news that Microsoft has abandoned the Windows CE branding in favour of the more consumer-friendly Pocket PC moniker which applies to both the operating system and the palm-sized devices it runs on.

Pocket Word will allow users to view, edit, send and receive Word documents on their Pocket PC and edited documents can be saved in either Pocket or native Word formats.

Pocket Excel supports all the categories and respective functions of the desktop version and spreadsheets can be saved on the device or used in the full version of Excel.

Pocket Inbox gives users full access to their e-mail and supports attachments, multiple folders and POP3, IMAP4 and LDAP standards.

There's also a Pocket version of Internet Explorer for HTML 3.2 browsing.

The new operating system supports USB, IrDA and a variety of CompactFlash peripherals.

Companies like Casio, Compaq, Hewlett-Packard, Siemens and Symbol Technologies are all expected to launch Pocket PCs, with the first units expected to arrive in the shops this summer.
