Apple has announced Mac OS X, an all-new version of the operating system for Macintosh computers. Set to ship in the summer, it promises a new level of functionality.
Chief among the improvements are pre-emptive multi-tasking, which provide better performance when users run applications simultaneously, and protected memory. The latter will prevent whole system reboots if one rogue application crashes, as each program's memory space is locked off from others.
An updated interface, codenamed Aqua, offers new-look windows, menus, icons and "The Dock" - a device that sits at the bottom of the screen and shows which applications are running.
As the code in Mac OS X is completely new, existing Mac applications will run under emulation. These will not run as fast as programs written with OS X in mind.
