Windows 2000 is set to launch by the time you read this but it could be months before the consumer version follows.

The latest version of the world's most popular computer operating system is actually designed to appeal to corporate markets - organisations that currently use Windows NT - and as such, that's pretty much the end of the Windows 2000 story as far as the average What PC? reader is concerned.

However, confusingly the 'consumer' version will be called Windows Millennium, rather than 2000, as Windows 95/98 users might have reasonably expected.

But even when Millennium does appear later this, well, millennium, don't expect a quantum leap in functionality on your desktop PC. Microsoft's stated aims with the new consumer operating system are to improve PC simplicity and expand support for home computer networks and Internet access. And if you think you've heard it all before, it's probably because you have.
