Seemingly inspired by Apple's iMac, Compaq is set to release a low-cost, simplified PC known as the iPaq.
A bold departure from its traditional systems, the unit features a sleek, black designer casing and will come in two versions - one with standard PC connectors and ports, and another with USB-only expansion. The former is expected to ship with Windows 98, while the new "legacy free" models will come with Windows 2000. The machines are initially aimed at the corporate market but we could see home versions if they are successful.
The standard iPaq boasts a 500MHz Celeron processor, 64Mb of RAM and a 4.3Gb hard disk, and prices in the US start from just $499. Compaq was unable to give UK pricing but you should expect at least a dollar for pound translation.
