Cut-price PCs on offer

New CompuServe 2000 members can save £250 on the cost of a Pentium III PC or £150 on a Celeron machine from Fujitsu Siemens.

Users opting for a Pentium III PC will pay £999 for their system and receive £250 cashback, while those choosing a Celeron 433MHz will pay £599 up front and get £150 cashback. Both systems include Microsoft Works 4.5 and a 56Kbits/s modem. The offer is subject to a three-year subscription to CompuServe 2000 at £7.50 per month, which provides access to the Internet and CompuServe's online content.

Equally tempting, if you're after a compact, affordable computer and have no desire to add any extras, is AST's Century City 100.

For only £999 you get a system with a 500MHz Celeron processor, 64Mb of RAM and a 4Gb hard drive. The Century City dispenses with legacy sockets and the only expansion opportunities are four USB ports, a VGA socket for the TFT monitor and a modem socket. The only time you should need to remove the cover is to add extra memory via the spare SDRAM socket.
