Following last month's speculation over the possibility of a portable iMac, Apple has finally unveiled its sexy new machine to the US public.

The new iBook is aimed at Internet users on the move, and will be available in both tangerine and blueberry colour schemes.

Based around the G3 processor running at a speedy 300MHz, the iBook features 32Mb of RAM as standard, a 12.1in 800x600 TFT screen, a 56Kbits/s V.90 and K56Flex-compatible modem, a 24x CD-ROM, a 3.2Gb hard disk and built-in USB and Ethernet interfaces for easy peripheral and network connections. Both 2D and 3D graphics are taken care of by a 2x AGP ATI RAGE Mobility chip with 4Mb of video memory, and Apple claims the system's Lithium-ion battery will provide up to six hours of use.

As expected, the iBook will come with the new MacOS 8.6 installed, and the software bundle is extensive. Apple is including both Netscape and Internet Explorer browsers, AOL 4.0, a 30-day free trial with ISP EarthLink, and a copy of the Internet Saftey Kit from EdView for parents who want to restrict their children's access to the Web.

A UK version is set for September, priced at around £1,000. Look out for a full review soon.
