Diamond has two reasons to be cheerful with the unveiling of a new portable MP3 player and the resolution of its legal dispute with the RIAA.
The Rio 500 will be available in three iMac-like colours. Its 64Mb of on-board memory equates to roughly two hours of digital quality music, double that of the Rio PMP 300. With a USB rather than a parallel port connector, downloading from your PC to the Rio 500 should be up to five times faster.
The legal dispute that dogged the launch of portable MP3 devices has been resolved. The RIAA - Recording Industry Association of America - had taken legal action against Diamond over fears that MP3 players would promote piracy. But thanks to their combined work on the Secure Digital Music Initiative, which aims to minimise piracy by setting up a secure distribution mechanism, both companies have agreed to halt all litigation.
