Summer PCs span the power spectrum

It has been fairly quiet on the PC front recently with just three companies announcing new models.

Dell is first up with the bold claim that its Dimension L series has 'redefined the low-cost consumer PC market'. Prices start at £744.95 (which includes delivery) for a PC powered by a 400MHz Celeron processor, 64Mb of RAM, a 4.3Gb hard disk, a 40x CD-ROM drive and a 56Kbits/s modem - which is certainly competitive, if not a new market definition. The systems also include a copy of Microsoft's Works Suite 99.

Time's entrant is competing at the top end. There's no prize for guessing that the 600-3s DVD CD-R Ultimate PC has a 600MHz Pentium III processor and a DVD-ROM drive. However, the CD-R suffix might lead you to believe that Time's latest PC has a recordable CD drive. In fact, it's better than that - the £1756.63 computer has rewritable CD drive (CD-RW).

Flowering in the Tulip PC bed is the Vision Line desktop range, aimed squarely at the business buyer. The systems are completely customisable, with options ranging from a basic Celeron 366MHz processor with 32Mb of RAM all the way up to a 500MHz Pentium III model with a 256Mb memory.
