Windows 2000 is set for 1999 release

Windows 2000, the eagerly awaited next-generation version of Windows, is edging nearer to completion with the launch of the first release candidate.

Aimed at users in both small and large businesses, Windows 2000 aims to combine the look and feel, ease of use and hardware support features of Windows 98 with the stability, security and performance of NT. It is written entirely in 32-bit code for maximum performance. The operating system will come in Professional and Server versions, but no specific home or consumer edition has been announced.

One interesting new feature is personalised menus - a 'smart' function that adapts the Start menu to suit a user's requirements by showing the most commonly-used applications. The system then monitors the usage of programs to keep this as clean as possible.

The new OS also integrates Internet Explorer 5 for Web access, as with Windows 98 Second Editon, and has security features to protect local drives, network and Internet connections.
