BT plans to usher in the next generation of high-speed Internet access next year, with the introduction of ADSL to nearly six million UK households.
ADSL (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line) uses the existing copper telephone network to deliver a permanent Internet connection that operates at speeds up to 10 times that achieved by a modem.
BT will equip the first 400 telephone exchanges with the equipment for ADSL between now and next spring. But it has not yet indicated what services it will offer or how much they will cost. As ADSL offers speeds far in excess of BT's Home Highway ISDN service (£40 a month including £15 of calls), pricing is likely to be at a point to avoid any competition.
'We want the UK to be a world leader in the information revolution, and our rollout programme, which we will announce shortly, will be very aggressive by international standards,' said BT chief executive Sir Peter Bonfield.
