Be, Inc has announced a major update to its alternative PC operating system, BeOS.
The company claims version 4.5 of its software, geared towards multimedia applications, will offer significant performance increases.
As well as speed improvements and bug fixes, BeOS 4.5 boasts greater support for peripherals such as graphics and sound cards, including drivers for the new 3Dfx Voodoo3.
It will support Apple's QuickTime 3.0 video format, used as standard throughout the multimedia authoring world, and adds MPEG-1 and AVI filecompatibility.
Be, Inc also claims that its new software will have a smaller footprint, requiring less memory and processing power than previous releases.
That said, it has also been optimised to take advantage of the new Pentium III and K6-III processors.
BeOS 4.5 will cost £50, and should be available in June.
