Apple's Worldwide Developer Conference in San Jose saw a renewed confidence in the Macintosh platform. This was illustrated by the announcement of a slew of new products, a 43 percent increase in attendance from last year, and the launch of over 3,000 new or updated Mac software titles.
The major announcement from interim CEO Steve Jobs was of new, slimmer, faster PowerBooks. The latest additions to the Apple notebook range feature G3 processors running at 333 and 400MHz. They are also 20 percent slimmer and almost a kilogram lighter than their predecessors. UK pricing is yet to be announced, but prices start from $2,499 in the US.
Other releases include Mac OS 8.6, the latest version of the Apple operating system, with an enhanced Sherlock search facility, faster network performance and several tweaks to the user interface.
