Connecting via USB, installation of the Predator is quick and easy with Windows automatically detecting the device and prompting you for the necessary drivers, which can be found on the included CDRom.
Standing alongside its removable-storage siblings, like the Jaz and Zip drives, the USB Predator runs at satisfactory speeds of 4x (write), 4x (rewrite) and 6x (read). However, thanks to an ingenious removable interface, it will soon be possible to upgrade the Predator to a FireWire connection, improving the performance to 8x 4x 32x.
Even though internal CD writer units can run much faster than USB models, the Predator's burning process is quick enough for most purposes. Using the supplied Easy CD Creator 4 software to generate an audio CD, the machine managed to create 74 minutes of audio in less than 20 minutes, and 650Mb of backup data in around the same time.
Designed with a streamlined exterior and futuristic bodywork, the Predator also doubles as a stylish second CDRom drive, allowing you to use two CDRom-based applications simultaneously. A headphone socket and volume control allows users to listen to audio CDs direct from the Predator, and a psychedelic pattern on the top of the case signifies when a disc is in motion by rotating in a hypnotic, yet soothing manner.
Perhaps its only pitfall is a huge power transformer plugged into the rear of the unit and a somewhat luxurious price tag of £250.
Bundled software includes: Adobe ActiveShare, Easy CD Creator 4, MusicMatch Jukebox, QuickSync 2 (30-day trial version).
Minimum requirements: Pentium 166Mhz PC, Windows 98/2000/Me, 110Mb of hard disk space for all software programs, sound card, USB port, 16Mb Ram.
