The latest offering from Infogrames, Silver is a sword and sorcery epic set firmly in the Diablo mould. Spread across two CDs, it boasts no less than 50 interactive characters and over 200 locations for PC adventurers to explore.
Based in medieval times, this game casts you as David, a young man with a few things on his mind. The love of his life has been kidnapped by the evil wizard Silver and his son Fuge, and now it's up to David and his grandfather to save the day. Of course, this is easier said than done.
First you'll have to make your way past Fuge's army of monsters and other ugly-looking creatures, which come in all shapes and sizes and don't seem to like you very much.
As you battle your way through this vast world exploring new destinations you can pick up weapons, magic potions, food and other power-ups to help you. These are either lying around or hidden in special treasure chests, which can be found scattered throughout the land.
On your journey you meet various other characters, some of whom may even journey with you and fight alongside you against the monsters aiming to make your game a short one. There's also a handy little guy who pops up every now and then to let you save your progress.
Infogrames' programmers are famous for their presentation and we have to admit that the smooth 3D graphics in Silver are absolutely stunning.
The background scenery is amazingly detailed and the character movements and speech are very realistic. There are also some excellent little touches like the way David will eat food, and the power-ups that you can pick up which allow you to perform special moves with your weapon.
The game is quite addictive but, as with all good adventures, you will occasionally find yourself stuck on certain parts. The world itself is huge and this quest will take some time to complete, even for the most experienced gamers. Another impressive feature is the way you use the keyboard and the mouse together to control your character, allowing for a wide range of realistic attacks with your sword.
Silver is another impressive title from the Infogrames stable. It is replete with beautiful graphics and addictive gameplay that requires thought and intelligence. It's a worthy rival to Diablo and should keep fans of that game well entertained until Diablo II arrives.QQ] Price: £35 (inc VAT)
