While other electronics companies have launched products that could be metaphorically described as dogs, Sony is the first to actually launch one. Billed as a 'four-legged entertainment robot', AIBO is a Chihuahua-sized robot dog that offers all the joys of pet ownership with none of the hassles.
AIBO is an autonomous robot that can act in response to external stimuli and according to its own judgement. In other words, unlike other programmable robots that can only follow instructions, AIBO is capable of interacting with its environment and learning from experience.
AIBO has four fully-articulated legs and a tail, together with an array of audio, visual, tactile and temperature sensors.
Powered by two lithium ion batteries, AIBO's 'brain' is a 64-bit RISC processor backed up with 16Mb of ROM and 8Mb of RAM. The bad news is that AIBO is only available over the Internet in Japan and the US (for $450) but the limited stock has already gone.
Consumers around the world will soon be able to buy a companion for their Sony Aibo robots as the electronics giant begins to deliver the second-generation metallic pet to its retail channels. 13 Oct 2000
