X-Wing Alliance takes you off the ground to try your hand at piloting the futuristic craft that fill the skies in the original Star Wars movies.
Even if the two previous X-Wing space combat simulators have passed you by, you shouldn't have too much trouble getting the hang of the game, thanks to the initial training missions, although these may bore aficionados.
It's worth putting in the effort to earn your wings, as your eventual reward is to get your hands on Han Solo's beloved Millennium Falcon, pitting your fighting skills against Darth's HQ - the Death Star. On your way to the top there are lots more vessels to cut your teeth on, and a 3D hangar where you can go for a bit of R&R to refuel or swap your ship.
Impressive graphics (on a powerful PC, with a decent 3D graphics card) put earlier Star Wars games to shame. It takes a bit of effort in the initial stages, but the challenges should keep you amused while you're waiting to see The Phantom Menace.
