Novell has moved to take a slice of the burgeoning Chinese Linux market by signing a deal with China Standard Software Co to promote the development and adoption of open source in the region.

Under the terms of the agreement, the pair will co-operate in providing technology, services and marketing to optimise and promote Linux to the Chinese market.

The firms will jointly promote value-added Linux products and services designed specifically for the Chinese market.

They promised to work together to localise the operating system, in addition to delivering product and technology training and technical support.

Dr Sen Ming Chang, managing director, Asia, and vice president, Asia Pacific, at Novell said: "China is recognised as a pioneer in the Linux market, and represents a vital market for Novell.

"Novell is increasing its investment in China, working closely with the government, and deepening our relationships with customers and partners."

In 2004, Novell joined the China Linux Standard Base and Open Source Initiative to promote the growth and development of Linux in China.
