Wireless industry giants Motorola, Nokia, Siemens, Sony Ericsson and Sun Microsystems have unveiled a 'Java Verified' programme to provide a unified testing and certification process for Java applications running on mobile handsets.
The programme, which will be managed by Sun, means that applications need to be tested and certified only once for deployment over a wide range of delivery channels, so reducing development cost and speeding time-to-market.
To join the programme, wireless developers must register at www.javaverified.com.
Submitted applications are tested for application launch, user interface, functionality, security, network and localisation capabilities.
The companies committed to co-operate on a unified testing initiative last June and claim to have made "rapid progress".
Alan Brenner, vice president of Sun's consumer and mobile systems group, said in a statement: "The rapid progress made by the group clearly demonstrates how committed the industry is to meeting the challenges of today's fast-changing marketplace."
And Mala Chandra, Motorola's mobile communications business vice president and director for client architecture and applications, said in a statement: "We believe industry co-operation on unified testing and certification for Java services makes great sense."
