Computer Aid International (CAI) has launched an appeal for old PCs.
The charity, which refurbishes unwanted computer equipment to donate to developing countries, receives most of its kit from businesses, but now wants to persuade more members of the public to contribute.
CAI said the lowest specification that it can realistically handle is Pentium II PCs, and it is also interested in printers and scanners. Hard drives will be wiped clean to Ministry of Defence and US Department of Defence standards to ensure that personal data is removed.
For people who upgrade their PCs, CAI can also make use of discarded components such as the hard drive and graphics card as long as they are still in working order.
After refurbishing, PCs and peripherals are sent to schools and community organisations in some of the poorest parts of the world.
Collection is though courier Parcel2Go and costs £9. If you are interested in donating any PC equipment call 01204 384426, quoting reference 'CAID'.
