Sun Microsystems said today that it will launch new low-power chips aimed at boosting server performance.

The 1.2GHz UltraSparc III processors are expected to launch at the end of this year, and will be placed in the company's high-end server and workstation products.

Built by Texas Instruments, the chips have been designed on a 130 nanometre process and will consume 53W of power, 30 per cent less than the current 1.05GHz models.

The reduction in power should reduce the amount of heat generated inside servers, which could cut the chances of component failure.
