Pogo sticks out with new PDA

UK start-up launches web-tastic personal digital assistant

UK start-up Pogo-Tech is set to launch a personal digital assistant (PDA) that will operate via current GSM networks and offer full-colour web browsing.

The core focus of the device, called the Pogo, will be wireless web access. It will feature a large touch-sensitive screen, and provide PDA, Personal Information Manager, email, web and phone functionality.

Proprietary data compression techniques have been deployed to allow full-screen web browsing at speeds more commonly associated with a 56K dial-up connection.

A unique Macromedia Flash-based interface has been developed for the PDA, allowing third-party applications to be easily written for the device.

Data is stored on a central server rather than on the PDA itself, thereby avoiding the memory limitations that other PDAs can suffer from.

Https and 128-bit encryption provide secure connection support, and make the Pogo as safe as a desktop PC for online purchasing. Other bundled functionality looks set to include SMS and an MP3 player.

The Pogo is due for UK release in January at a retail price of £299. It will initially be available exclusively via Carphone Warehouse stores.

Keep an eye on the Product section of vnunet.com in December for one of the first UK reviews of the device.
