UK Napster clone Wippit, which launches on 4 October, has signed a content deal with up to 550 UK indie labels including Mute, Ministry of Sound and Beggars Banquet.
Wippit, which charges subscribers to its peer-to-peer network £50 a year, has signed a deal with The Association of Independent Music, which signed a similar deal with Napster earlier this year.
Rostered artists available through Wippit now include DJ Paul Oakenfold, rock legend Iggy Pop and downbeat star Howie B.
The firm has also inked an agreement with audiobboksforcree.com, which turns books into MP3 files.
Paul Myers, founder and chief executive at Wippit, promised more content deals would be signed soon.
He said: "These initial content agreements are only the tip of the iceberg. We're on our way to offering more than has ever been legitimately offered before."
Napster, the website, was built as a central host for users wishing to swap MP3 music files. It has sparked an almighty legal battle over its legitamacy and has changed the way people obtain music. 01 May 2001
