A new cut price Linux-based PDA which will retail for less than $100 was released today.

The PowerPlay III runs Empower Technologies' Linux DA operating system, designed specifically for such devices.

Currently shipping to US and Canadian customers for a budget price of only $99 (introductory offer of $89), it is available to order exclusively from the Linux DA website.

The device offers a Motorola Dragonball processor running at 16Mhz, 8Mb RAM and 2Mb of upgradeable Flash memory, but no support for external devices via expansion slots.

Like the Palm m100 series, the device runs off two non-rechargeable AAA batteries and opts for a serial port connection to a PC.

Reportedly compatible with Palm handhelds, the PowerPlay III can communicate directly with Palm devices and utilise hardware designed for the Palm.

Offering a higher screen resolution of 240 x 320 pixels than its Palm rivals, the PowerPlay comes complete with 15 applications ranging from an Address Book and Memo to a graphics program.

Also included on purchase is a one-year warranty, 15 days email support, six months' worth of OS upgrades and a carrying case.
