Nordic/Baltic telecom information service supplier Telia has linked up with Sun Microsystems to jointly develop home gateway software that will deliver a constant Internet connection into European homes.

Stig-Arne Larsson, president of Telia, confirmed that the company plans to field test the gateway in a small number of Scandinavian homes this year, working with Sun Microsystems to develop network-delivered services via networked devices in the home using Sun's Java and Jini technologies. Devices will include entertainment centres, security systems and kitchen appliances.

At CES Telia demonstrated how, using Sun's technologies, it can create a home security system that allows homeowners see, talk to, and allow access to a repairman or family member into their home remotely via a cellphone.

Initially Telia's broadband services will be rolled out in Sweden. About 60 per cent of Swedish homes have PCs and 50 per cent of the population have mobile phones. "Swedes are almost always online," said Larsson.

Telia has set a target of reaching one million Swedish homes within two years.

"The Scandinavian region of Europe is one of the most wired regions in the world," said Scott McNealy, chairman of Sun Microsystems. "A connected home is the next step in the European continent's technology evolution."

Telia declined to comment on whether it would go after other European territories.
