Intel has really focused on ramping up the megahertz on its Pentium 4 processors, with the latest offering rated at 1.8Ghz. One of the first system builders to take advantage is Systemax, with its P1800RV Lifestyle 0990 computer.
Sitting in the PGA 432 socket of Gigabyte's GA-8TX motherboard, the processor is backed up by 256Mb of RDRam split over two modules. This leaves a further pair of memory slots free but, as it stands, performance is excellent with an overall SYSmark 2001 score that exceeds that of a similarly specced 1.4Ghz Athlon system. However, although there has been some improvement here in the past few months, the Pentium 4 is still attracting a price premium over Athlon systems.
The P1800RV as a whole is a fine machine. For storage, you get a capacious 61.5Gb hard drive from IBM, which meets the UltraDMA100 standard for maximum throughput potential, and a Yamaha CRW2100E CD-RW capable of writing at 16-speed and rewriting at 10-speed. Sitting below this drive is a slotted 16-speed DVDRom drive from Pioneer.
The P1800RV also comes with a 3DPower Morpheus graphics card that employs nVidia's GeForce3 chipset to full effect. If your movie or game has been encoded for Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound, then the Creative DTT2200 speakers and VideoLogic Sonic Fury audio card will really enhance your multimedia experience.
Finally, sitting in its usual home beside the midi-tower case is a CTX PR960F 19in monitor that uses Sony's world renowned FD Trinitron tube.
This CRT produces a fine and stable picture full of contrast and punchy colours at its maximum resolution of 1600 x 1200 at 85Hz. It also comes with a four-port USB hub.
With a 56K V.90 modem, Microsoft Sidewinder gamepad, a copy of Lotus SmartSuite Millennium and a small six-game bundle, this is a stirring system that, although pricey, paves the way for an Intel market surge.
