Similar to Dell's Inspiron 8100, the Inspiron 8200 includes new features that make it stand out from its sister product. It uses Intel's new Pentium 4-M processor, as well as nVidia's GeForce4 440 Go mobile graphics chip.

This means that it offers high performance, but the 8200 can also run the latest 3D applications in a way notebook PCs haven't previously been able to.

The 8200 is a three-spindle device with plenty of room for the floppy disk drive and Sony CD-RW/DVD-Rom combo drive that operates at 4/16/24-speed. For internal storage, it has a Hitachi 40Gb hard disk drive. Alongside the floppy disk drive is the system's battery, a 4,400mAh Li-ion.

You can replace the floppy disk drive with a second battery (£79.99 ex. VAT), another optical drive, a Zip drive (£149.99 ex. VAT) or a second hard disk drive (£249.99 ex. VAT).

Designed as a desktop replacement notebook PC, it has the full range of I/O ports with a serial, parallel, external VGA, two USB, one PS/2 and one four-pin IEEE 1394 port. It also has an S-Video out port that combines with a supplied dongle that splits into S-Video, composite video and digital audio.

The GeForce 4 440 Go with 64Mb of DDR SDRam has been specifically designed for mobile use and has built-in 5X anti-aliasing using nVidia's Quincunx technology. This means it can run full 3D applications, such as computer aided design or games, and powers the system's 15in. SXGA display, which has a native resolution of 1,600 x 1,200 pixels at 32-bit colour depth.

The 8200 has built-in 802.11b wireless technology with a Dell TrueMobile 1150 mini PCI card, in addition to a 3Com integrated network adapter and an Actiontec V.92 modem. Windows XP Home Edition is preinstalled and you can also use its IEEE 1394 port for networking.

The downsides are that the 8200 is one of the largest available, weighs 3.7kg and gets warm after prolonged use, but if it's mainly used on a desk it would be ideal as a desktop replacement system.
