Toshiba's Satellite Pro 6000 is the latest reworking of Toshiba's popular notebook PC brand. Designed to sit between its Tecra and Portege models, it's slightly heavier than an ultraportable notebook PC, but offers good performance with a wide range of connectivity options.
The Satellite Pro 6000 is based around the latest version of Intel's 1.2GHz Mobile Pentium III-M with 512KB Level 2 cache with Enhanced SpeedStep, which steps the system down to 800MHz when running on batteries. The processor is accompanied by 256MB of PC2100 DDR SDRAM and runs Windows 2000 Professional.
Our review model uses the faster DDR SDRAM memory because, instead of an Intel chipset, it uses an Ali Cyber Aladdin-T that has an integrated CyberBlade XP Ai1 graphics controller. The system also has a 30GB Toshiba hard disk drive.
It has built-in IEEE 802.11b wireless with Bluetooth available as an option. This, however, has to be installed by a dealer. It's a two-spindle device and has no built-in floppy disk drive, although an external USB drive is supplied. The system also comes with a DVD-ROM/CD-RW combo drive.
The system is around the same size as a desktop replacement notebook PC, measuring 33.0 by 28.9 by 34.8cm, but weighs much less at only 2.6kg.
Because of its size it has a 15in TFT display with a native resolution of 1,024 by 768 pixels. A docking bay is available but it isn't necessary as the Satellite Pro 6000 already has both parallel and serial ports, Intel 10/100 NIC, a Toshiba AMR modem, two USB ports, one PS/2 and a composite video port plus two stacked Type II PC Cards.
It also has an SD card slot so transferring files is made easier. For physical security it offers a Kensington Security Slot.
As with almost all Toshiba notebook PCs, the Satellite Pro 6000 has a trackpoint in the middle of the keyboard and four mouse buttons (left and right buttons plus two scroll buttons). Audio playback is supported by two speakers placed on either side of the screen hinge that have built-in sub-woofers and support Dolby surround sound.
The Toshiba Satellite Pro 6000 is a good all-round system that offers a great deal for the price.Contact
