This system puts Intel'S 2.2GHz Pentium 4 processor to good use, surrounding it with high performance components and providing a useful two-year on-site warranty.

Some of the components will be familiar to anyone who's read the spec sheet for a new business PC. There's an LG Electronics DVD-ROM drive and a Samsung Electronics 24/10/40-speed CD-RW drive.

The primary E-IDE channel is used to provide an interface for the Ultra ATA/100 40GB IBM Vancouver hard disk drive, which uses cooler-friendly thin cables to minimise air resistance from the twin cooling fans.

Alongside the processor are two DIMM slots, one of which is occupied with a 256MB DDR SDRAM module. The other is free, as are four of the PCI slots and two drive bays, so there's lots of room for expansion.

Business connectivity is a key feature of this PC, which has an Intel Pro/1000 Gigabit Ethernet adapter installed in one PCI slot. This will automatically switch down to 100Mbit/s or 10Mbit/s if your network demands it, but it's useful to have the extra, particularly for firms that are part of the way through a network upgrade.

For non-networkers, there's an Intel HaM data/fax/voice modem in another PCI slot. There are also the usual two USB ports and one serial and one parallel port.

The graphics output is generated by an ATI Radeon 7500 with 64MB of memory. This card has a DVI-I output, but that's not used here. Instead, the D-Sub VGA port is used to send the graphics signal to the AOC LM-700 17in LCD monitor. This is an adequate display, but nothing special. Neither the contrast nor the focus of our model was outstanding, even at the native resolution.

Audio output is great, though, courtesy of the built-in audio adapter, supplemented by a Hercules SC-Riser 6 sound adapter in the CNR slot.

You also get either Windows XP or 2000 Professional as well as other tools, and a Microsoft Intellitype keyboard and USB mouse.

Display aside, this system has enough to take on offerings from better-known manufacturers, and the two-year on-site warranty could be the clincher for many buyers.
