The slowest part of any system is the hard disk drive, so for fast data transfers you need a large capacity drive with a fast spin speed and a big buffer or cache. Western Digital's SE version of its Caviar 100GB drive [PC Magazine, December 2001] comes with an 8MB cache, which has increased from the original 2MB. This particularly helped its performance in our High-End Disk WinMark 99 tests.
Apart from the quadrupled buffer, the Caviar WD1000BB SE's specification remains similar to the standard unit, which includes three platters, a spin speed of 7,200rpm, a claimed seek time of 9.6ms, as well as a storage capacity of 100GB.
The inclusion of 8MB cache is what really makes this drive stand out, however, taking its performance within just two per cent of Seagate's Cheetah X15 36LP, which is a 15,000rpm 36.7GB Ultra160 SCSI drive.
The hard disk drive is backed by a three-year warranty.
The performance increase of the Caviar WD1000BB SE makes it a good option for people building high performance servers or those wanting to avoid the price premium associated with SCSI-based systems.
