A sleek design and a fast processor make the lightweight Evesham Voyager SI stand out. On paper, this notebook PC certainly impresses, but when it comes to using it, its good looks and speed may not be quite enough for some users. Certain components, such as the keyboard and touchpad, actually felt quite cheap. Plus, the battery didn't last very long, making the Voyager SI's usability on the move limited.

At the heart of the system is Intel's 1.2GHz Mobile Pentium III processor-M. Coupled with 384MB of RAM this helps the Voyager SI to achieve a high performance score of 38.4.

The onboard Intel 830m graphics adapter, which has only 1MB of RAM, may seem an illogical choice, but as it can use system RAM as needed, performance is not bad for a notebook PC.

A Toshiba hard disk drive allows up to 40GB of data to be stored. There are no other internal drives, which keeps the weight down, but an external 8/4/24/8-speed Matshita DVD/CD-RW drive is included, as well as an external USB floppy disk drive.

Display is output to the 13.1in screen, which is bright and clear. The touchpad works well, and is a good size, but the buttons feel loose.

A Kensington Lock Slot is provided for physical security.

Output options abound. There are three USB ports, an IEEE 1394 port, a SoftK56 data/fax modem, as well as a Realtek RTL8139 10/100Base-T NIC and infrared port. An Intel AC'97 audio device provides mono sound to the single speaker located at the front. A single Type II PC Card slot sits on the left-hand side of the system.

The Voyager SI comes with Windows XP Home Edition pre-installed and includes Roxio's Easy CD Creator 5 and CyberLink's PowerDVD. There's also Big Fix support software to help with system problems.

If you're primarily concerned about speed and want a relatively stylish system to boot, then the Voyager SI is worth a look. It's a capable notebook PC, but with a few more high quality components, such as better keyboard and stereo sound output, it could have been a great notebook PC.
