BT and Intel announce 3G alliance

Intel and BT have formed an alliance to develop applications and services for third-generation (3G) mobile internet devices.

At last week's Intel Developer Forum in Amsterdam, it was announced that BTexact, BT Wireless and Intel would work on developing technologies for mobile users.

The move is vital for BT, which is keen to build up data services to help recover the money it has spent on 3G licences and GPRS. Intel is also eager to have a big player in the market on its side to show that it is serious about wireless technology.

According to Intel, BT is one of 24 companies in Europe to support its Personal Internet Client Architecture (PCA), which the company said is designed to speed up the delivery of 3G applications for high-performance, low-power voice and data mobile devices.

"We've received large support for PCA in Europe," said Ron Smith, senior vice president of wireless communications and computing for Intel. "Our labs will work together to accelerate applications and services for wireless internet to create working groups that span both location and wireless networks."
