Mobile manga mania will hit Europe this year, according to Japanese mobile phone operator NTT DoCoMo. The company has been talking to telcos in Germany, France and the UK about launching its GSM-based graphic-rich iMode application in Europe.

A spokesman said that an "iMode-like" service could be up and running at the end of this year or the beginning of 2002.

The plans will depend on heavy support from operators in Europe. Swedish telco Telia has already expressed interest in supplying iMode's HTML-based text information and animations to mobile handsets.

DoCoMo's up-front attitude wasn't matched by its staff, however, who seemed unaware that the devices on display in Hanover would not work in real time. There are no iMode stations in Germany so the phones' flashy graphics were limited to downloaded images.

The company admitted that it would delay its launch of the world's first third-generation (3G) network. The Japanese service is based on wideband Code Division Multiple Access with circuit-switched and packet data transmission.
