It makes it an ideal tool for setting up tutorials and guides to Windows and other software.

Simply select the recording area - be it an individual box, a specific area or the full screen - press 'record' and then do what you want to do; pressing Escape ends the recording. One little criticism is the jerkiness of the mouse pointer during the capture, but it doesn't adversely affect operation.

Once you're happy with your recording you can save and export it. The recording will save as a WMV or AVI file, or as an animated GIF for sending as an email attachment or uploading to the internet. The files will play back automatically on your default media player once you have converted them.

With a free headset and microphone included it is very easy to record an accompanying commentary or other kind of audio track as well. You can choose whether to record at 8- or 16-bit quality, and in stereo or mono. You can also increase the sample rate, but the default of 22KHz is more than adequate for recording plain speech.

ScreenCorder works well and makes it very easy to convert your files and automatically compress them so they are all of a manageable size. We took a 20-second film of our 1024 x 768-resolution screen, accompanied by a continuous 8-bit mono audio commentary and then converted it into a WMV file.

This took up just 241Kb of memory, which is very little and makes storage demands a massive plus. Another good feature is the ability to record over any mistakes you find, until you are satisfied that everything is perfect.

Specifications:

Promote your software

Create tutorials

Record and re-record audio

Develop CBT material

Make animated GIFs

Free headset

Minimum requirements: Pentium 200MHz PC; 32Mb Ram; sound card; Windows 95 or NT4; Windows Media Player 7.

Contact: MatchWare 020 8940 9700 www.matchware.net

Ben Lewis, What PC?, Friday 15 March 2002 at 10:24:52

Capture screen actions quickly and easily.

This program provides an easy way of recording onscreen actions, and saving the results as a video file. Segmentis buZZ is such a plug-in and will work with Adobe Photoshop, Paint Shop Pro, Corel Photopaint or any other software that supports Adobe-compatible plug-ins.

buZZ has two unique features. One is the Stack, whereby you can concatenate a series of effects and apply them all at once. buZZ ships with some ready-made stacks, such as oil and watercolour effects, and you can save and reload your own.

Though many of the effects in the Stack, such as blur and edge detect, are commonplace to image processing, the killer feature is the Simplifier. This does exactly what it says - apply it to a scanned photo and it will decrease the detail, while preserving colours.

The effect is finely variable and gives the impression that the image is a painting rather than a photo.

Although many image processors have 'artistic' filter effects, buZZ does it far more elegantly and subtly. To get the best out of buZZ, you really need to use it in conjunction with the Layers feature of an image processor and combine buZZing with the effects already available in the host software.

The sample files looked just too good to be true, but after working through the tutorial we were getting similar results. As long as a photo is decently composed, it can be buZZed into a handsome work of art.

Not only can you make a photo look like a painting, but also you can change the style of an existing work. We took an image of a 16th century French painting and re-invented it in post-impressionist style.

Simply brilliant and totally addictive, both for graphic professionals and Sunday painters.

Contact

Segmentis: 01223 701701, www.segmentis.com

Tim Nott, What PC?, Thursday 1 February 2001 at 00:00:00

Create great effects in image-editing software with this elegant plug-in.

If you've ever used image-editing software, then you'll know that a 'plug-in' is a third-party addition that can create effects not possible in the original program.
