New system to improve health and safety for armed forces

The Ministry of Defence (MOD) is implementing a new incident recording information system (Iris) to help improve health and safety reporting for 300,000 personnel.

Under a 10-year, £5m contract, supplier LogicaCMG will implement Iris, based on a product provided by Omniware, to enable better information collection and analysis of incidents.

The incident reporting application will be initially hosted at MOD’s data centres in South Wales, and LogicaCMG will provide data migration, training, and support services.

Iris features an information capture tool, a workflow tool and a management reporting layer to help the MOD gather information on trends and frequency of accidents, to make equipment and processes safer for staff.

The system will also interface with both MOD and non-MOD systems for the first time, making it easier to exchange information on incidents and claims, providing the MOD with more efficient incident and claims management.

Iris will be rolled out in early 2008 across 1,000 users ranging from incident and claims handlers to equipment managers and MOD policy staff.

‘The Iris system is a very important element in enabling the MOD to better discharge its duty of care to all our people whether they are servicemen and women, civil servants or contractors,’ said Michael Rutter, director of safety and environmental policy at the MOD.

‘Through better understanding and increased awareness of occupational health and safety risks, we will also be able to make better use of resources in delivering our core tasks to produce battle-winning people and equipment.’
