The mobile communications industry will be focusing on the maturity and speed of wireless communication and third generation (3G) mobile content at 3GSM in Cannes next week.
But users wanting to invest in the latest technologies are likely to be looking for answers to the questions recently raised about the rise in threats to mobile security by reports saying wireless devices are more vulnerable to viruses.
The monthly IBM Global Business Security Index Report published this week provides a view on the trends likely to emerge for security threats in 2005.
'In mobile devices such as PDAs [personal digital assistants] and cell phones are the new frontier for viruses, spam and other potential security threats,' it said.
The actual conference agenda is focused on how to lure consumers and businesses with new 3G offerings following the launch of 3G across 45 carrier networks last year.
But the hardware and technology manufacturers, carriers, operators, and content providers will also have to balance hard marketing with the market's confidence in the industry's ability to control the spread of viruses and malware.
The spread of wireless technologies other than 3G like WiMax, the alternative to broadband, as well as the likely announcement of new microchips that can decode TV signals, are also likely to grab the interest of delegates with an eye on mobile investments beyond 2005.
And keynotes from the chief executives of mobile giants from every geography, representing T-Mobile International, the Orange Group, NTT DoCoMo and Motorola for example, will be joined with leading analyst and researchers to discuss new technologies and the analysis of growth markets and new revenue streams.
