The momentum for web services application development is increasing, with the launch of high-profile vendor initiatives to encourage adoption.
User interest is being driven by the desire to react quickly to business changes, according to a report by analyst Meta Group.
"Web services will be the next step in the evolution of web architecture, reflecting a clean division between the production and delivery of information," the report claims. "Companies need to master the new web services protocols, and how they can be used for business advantage."
Meta advised users to ditch old-style programming languages such as C or Cobol, and adopt modern techniques such as 'componentised' development - building smaller, reusable portions of software - and to look towards web services, such as Java and XML.
