There are many security software packages on the market that seek to stop bad stuff making a mess of your PC's delicate internals. If you are anxious about keeping your PC safe from attack, the latest version of Trend Micro's PC-cillin aims to answer the call.
PC-cillin 2002 is another addition to shop shelves already buckling under the weight of security software but it is far more than just an antivirus package. This is a security suite designed to keep your PC safe from harm.
The advantage of getting firewall and anti-virus software on the same CD-Rom is that the two programs are less likely to conflict.
PC-cillin only requires a 133MHz processor, 32Mb of memory and Windows 95 to operate. Even XP owners only need a 300MHz processor.
Installation is a doddle. Once the disc is inserted, the PC is protected in minutes. Registration is required to obtain the latest software updates. This is essential for antivirus products and is a straightforward process.
We were pleased to see that the updates were applied without having to reboot in the majority of cases, and that we were informed when they were available.
Configuring the software is achieved by asking the user some simple questions rather than presenting a list of checkboxes, which is nice and friendly.
However, the initial scan of the PC's drives to make sure it is clean before you start has to be started by the user. We feel that this should be an automatic operation rather than an option, as it's very important to know that the computer is healthy beforehand.
Once the software is running it stays behind the scenes, apart from an annoying pop-up box whenever email is checked. It has a friendly interface and, at £35, is a good value security package.
