Apple faces new court battles - over machines by rival companies bearing an uncanny similarity to its best-selling iMac. The stylish design of the computer has been praised by many and some companies, including Future Power and Emachines, produced Windows computers that looked a little too similar for Apple's lawyers.
The most recent fight was against Future Power, part of the Korean Daewoo industrial giant. The firm's E-Power was announced in a range of colours, in semi-translucent plastic. Apple won an injunction preventing the systems being distributed under laws that protect distinctive designs.
Although Apple claimed to have settled the case, Future Power has said it will be back with a system that's identical, though with a case that's silvery-blue, and not see-through. Daewoo's agreement with Apple will, says a Future Power spokesman, let them make PCs in iMac colours in four years time. The new E-Power should be out in the US this month.
The industry is buzzing with rumours that Apple is to launch a new cube-shaped iMac computer at the opening of its Macworld trade show in New York today. 19 Jul 2000
