With the Matrix 64 3200+ 68 Ultra, Mesh has built a PC that combines the current trend for black styling with some useful components that lift it above the high-water mark. It's based on an AMD Athlon 64 3200+ processor (running at 2GHz), and 512Mb of memory. The processor is not the fastest in the range but it still packs a punch, and the memory is more than adequate.

It also comes with a massive 200Gb hard disk, which uses the latest Serial-ATA technology to connect it to the rest of the computer. Unless you're doing serious video-editing work you probably won't notice the speed improvement given by this new hard disk format, but it's good to know that Mesh is putting the effort in.

It is supplied with a recordable DVD drive, which will read and write all formats except DVD-RAM, and another DVD-ROM drive for disc-to-disc copying. The graphics card has two DVI outputs so you can have a high-quality dual-display setup if you wish. It also sports an S-Video socket so that you can hook the PC up to your television.

The monitor is a 19in Mitsubishi Diamond Pro and because it's a CRT model rather than a TFT, is very big and very heavy. However, it does provide a fantastic picture that is great for games, being far sharper and brighter than an equivalent TFT screen.

Like the monitor, the Logitech cordless keyboard and mouse are styled to match the PC base unit. Sound is catered for by a Soundblaster Audigy 2 sound card along with a Creative Labs' surround-sound system, which should be more than a match for any game or film.

Mesh has also shoehorned Wi-Fi into the case, as well as the usual Firewire and USB 2 sockets. There is a spare PCI slot inside the case and one free drive bay on the front panel should you wish to upgrade.

The Matrix 64 3200+ 68 Ultra comes with Windows XP Home, Microsoft Works, Pinnacle Studio 9SE, Instant CD/DVD and WinDVD, and it is covered by a two-year on-site warranty and a year of return-to-base cover.
