With any new hard disk MP3 player, comparisons with the Apple iPod are inevitable. But the Philips HDD100 is one device that can stand up to comparison.
Decked out in black and silver, and a similar size, the HDD100 is every bit as attractive as the iPod. Its 15Gb capacity is good enough for around 3,000 MP3 or WMA songs but where it really wins is with its PC-friendliness.
A USB 2 port lets you plug it directly into a PC without the need for a cradle. Windows will automatically recognise it as a removable hard disk, so you can start transferring music files at once.
Should you want to go the software route then Philips' Digital Media Management software is just as easy to use. Simply tell it where you keep your MP3s and it will synchronise all of your music at the touch of a button.
Operating the HDD100 is straightforward and the only real problem we experienced was the slow update speed of the screen. You won't have any complaints with the sound quality, though, particularly if you replace the bundled headphones.
It may not quite knock the iPod off its throne, but the HDD100 is the only worthy contender.
