Toshiba has something of a reputation for building sturdy, neat handheld computers. In fact, most models tend to look the same and that is the case with the e750. This high-end model looks very similar to some of the poorer relations in the Toshiba range. A key physical difference between this and lower-cost models is the 3.8in screen - most Pocket PCs have 3.5in displays. The extra bit of display comes into its own if you like graphics-rich applications like viewing web pages or images. That said, no more information can fit on this screen than smaller ones as it runs at the same 240 x 320 resolution. Everything on the screen just appears a little larger.
The two really interesting features of the Toshiba are hidden from the casual observer. First, the e750 comes with Wi-Fi built in. This means you can join a wireless network in a suitably equipped coffee shop or airport departure lounge without fiddling around with an expansion card. It also means that both the memory card slots are available for adding extras.
The other special feature of the e750 is that it has a total of 96Mb of memory. The standard 64Mb which is split between storage for applications you add and space in which to run applications.
An Intel PXA 255 processor provides the speed and runs at 400MHz. This is the fastest handheld processor available. Toshiba claims 10 hours of life from the battery between charges - you can lengthen this by slowing the processor speed in the software - and if you really need more, a supplementary 30 hour battery is available.
There are other versions of the e750 available. The e750 Bluetooth model sells for around £40 less than the Wi-Fi version, while a version running the older Pocket PC 2002 edition still costs £499 but can be upgraded for free to the latest 2003 version at a later date if you fancy it. We can't think why you would.
If anything lets this handheld down it is the fact that Toshiba provides a meagre software bundle. Overall, though, if neat and stylish is what you like and you have the cash, the e750 is a nice handheld.
