Given the burgeoning market share enjoyed by the Palm devices and the multimedia extravaganza offered by the Pocket PC, it's about time Psion came up with something to shift the balance back in its favour. Unfortunately, the Revo Plus isn't it.
For this update, Psion has simply doubled the amount of memory to 16Mb and changed the colour of the case from blue to grey. The extra memory makes the Revo Plus capable of running a greater range of applications, and Psion has included a couple of new ones on a bundled CD-ROM
The first is Opera, a web browser designed to replace the previous Symbian application. Opera allows surfers to make secure connections to websites for such things as online shopping and banking. While Opera turns the Revo Plus into a serious tool for online use, the small, murky screen and slow download speeds using a mobile phone make working with large, complex sites a chore.
The other new application is also a browser, this time for Wap sites. With its Qwerty keyboard, Wap on the Revo Plus becomes a more serious proposition - and, unlike a mobile phone, you won't need to upgrade as the technology develops. None of this sounds overly exciting, but then, Psion really should have come up with something better a year after the launch of the original.
The Revo Plus is still one of the better choices of handheld computer with keyboard, though. It uses the same applications as the Series 5mx and the agenda, word processor and spreadsheet are all prime examples of what makes a good handheld.
What doesn't make for a good handheld is the Revo Plus's PsiWin 2.3 PC connectivity software. As such things go, this works well enough, but the problem is that it only works some of the time. A new version is due soon, but whether this fixes things remains to be seen.
